Apple’s latest M3 chips feature significant GPU enhancements designed to cater to the needs of both gaming and professional applications.
Apple’s latest GPU architecture introduces a new feature known as Dynamic Caching, as well as hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading to their M3 processor lineup, comprising the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max.
In the announcement of Apple’s new M3 processors, significant improvements to the GPU component of these chips are unveiled. While all three variants, the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max, promise enhanced CPU performance, it’s noteworthy that the M3 series focuses on substantial GPU enhancements, designed to elevate performance in professional applications and gaming.
These M3 chips are set to make their debut in upcoming MacBook Pro models, with the standard M3 chip also being integrated into the new 24-inch iMac.

The base M3 chip features an eight-core CPU with a balanced combination of four performance cores and four efficiency cores. Apple claims that it boasts up to 35% faster CPU performance compared to the M1. Though a direct comparison to the M2 remains elusive, when the M2 was introduced last year, Apple stated it offered an 18% boost in CPU performance over the M1.
The M3 further includes a 10-core GPU with a next-generation architecture, promising a remarkable 65% improvement in graphics performance compared to the M1. It supports a maximum of 24GB of unified memory and can accommodate one external display, in addition to the built-in displays in iMacs and MacBooks.
Moving up to the M3 Pro, this variant offers an enhanced 12-core CPU configuration, comprising six performance cores and six efficiency cores, as well as an 18-core GPU that outpaces the M1 Pro by up to 40%. Apple asserts that the M3 Pro delivers up to 30% faster CPU performance than the M1 Pro for single-threaded tasks, once again avoiding a direct M2 comparison. It supports a maximum of 36GB of unified memory.
The top-tier M3 Max boasts a 16-core GPU, featuring 12 performance cores and four efficiency cores, along with a 40-core GPU that is touted to be up to 50% faster than the M1 Max. The M3 Max accommodates up to 128GB of unified memory. Apple claims a substantial 80% improvement in GPU performance over the M1 Max, which represents a notable leap, particularly since the M2 Max was declared to be up to 30% faster than the M1 Max in graphics earlier this year.
