Enhance Your iPhone Call Quality Dramatically with Apple’s Latest ‘Voice Isolation’ Feature – Learn How to Activate It

Are you eager to enhance the audio quality of your iPhone calls? Well, we’ve got some fantastic news for you – Apple has introduced a brand-new feature called “Voice Isolation” that can make a world of difference.

This remarkable addition, known as Voice Isolation, has been available for FaceTime and various third-party apps for a while, but now, it’s accessible for standard voice calls as well, thanks to the iOS 16.4 update.

Curious about how to take advantage of this innovative iPhone feature to enjoy crystal-clear phone conversations? Here’s a comprehensive guide.

Understanding Voice Isolation for iPhone

Voice Isolation leverages the powerful machine learning capabilities of Apple’s latest iPhone chips to dynamically suppress ambient noise. In essence, when you activate Voice Isolation during a call, your voice takes center stage, while background noises are subdued, resulting in exceptionally clear and crisp sound quality.

How to Enable Voice Isolation on Your iPhone

Strangely, Apple doesn’t make Voice Isolation the default setting for calls, and it’s not readily visible in the Settings menu. To activate it, you’ll need to enable it through the Control Center within the app you’re using.

1. Ensure that your iPhone is running iOS 16.4. You can check this by going to Settings, then General, and selecting About. If you’re using an earlier version, head back to the General section and tap Software Update to download the latest iOS update.

2. Initiate a call using either the phone or FaceTime apps.

3. While your call is in progress, swipe down from the top-right corner of your screen to access the Control Center, which offers various quick options for your iPhone.

4. Tap the microphone icon located at the top-right corner of the Control Center to access microphone settings.

5. From the list of options, select Voice Isolation.

The great news is that you won’t have to perform these steps each time you make a call, as your phone will remember your previous choice. For most users, this means that they can enjoy improved call quality without any additional effort.

However, there’s a third option besides Voice Isolation and Standard modes, known as “Wide Spectrum.” This mode does the opposite of Voice Isolation by capturing as much sound as possible. It’s handy if you want the person on the other end of the call to hear what’s happening in the background. Please note that this setting is primarily intended for FaceTime, and attempting to enable it for voice calls will result in a “currently unavailable” message, although it may become available for regular phone conversations in the future.

Can You Use Voice Isolation with Third-Party Apps?

Voice Isolation is also available to third-party apps through an API, which means that many communication applications supporting video calls will allow you to enhance the audio quality. Popular apps like WhatsApp, Teams, Slack, Signal, and Instagram support this feature in the same manner as outlined above. Simply open your preferred communication app, initiate a call, and activate Voice Isolation through the Control Center.

Which iPhones Support Voice Isolation for Voice Calls?

To use Voice Isolation for voice calls, you’ll need iOS 16.4, and it’s compatible with the following iPhone models, listed in reverse chronological order:

However, it’s worth noting that Apple’s official support page for Spatial Audio, Voice Isolation, and Wide Spectrum excludes the 2017 iPhone X and iPhone 8 series. This omission likely stems from these phones being the first to incorporate a dedicated Neural Engine for machine learning tasks, and their initial implementation may not be as effective, despite laying the groundwork for subsequent models.

Additionally, older iPhones capable of running iOS 15 for FaceTime Voice Isolation support, such as the iPhone 7, iPhone SE (2016 model), and iPhone 6s series, are ineligible, despite the feature being present in the software.
